What types of internet service providers (ISPs) are available in Clarke?
Wired: Wired internet service is provided via cable and fiber optic to homes and businesses by Comcast. (As of 2020, there is no other fiber provider operating in Clarke.) Digital subscriber line (DSL) service via telephone landlines is also available in some areas. DSL, while faster than dial-up, typically does not provide speed that is considered broadband.
Wireless (WISP): Wireless internet service is provided via a special antenna connected to the home or business by the provider. It requires clear line of sight to a tower or other structure that houses the provider’s transmission antenna. This method of service can be limited by tree coverage, terrain, or other obstructions to a clear line of sight.
Satellite: Internet access via satellite is available throughout the county but, similar to WISP service, it requires a clear line of sight from the customer’s dish to the provider’s satellite – generally, a “clear view of the southern sky.” Tree coverage, terrain, or other obstructions can limit availability of this service. Satellite can provide fast download speeds, but due to latency issues it is not reliable for teleconferencing applications such as distance learning. Satellite providers commonly have data caps.
Cellular: Wireless internet via cellular telecommunications companies is also available in most areas of the county. Proximity to a tower or structure housing the provider’s transmission antennas, terrain, and building type all impact the effectiveness of cellular internet. Service is provided via the customer’s mobile phone or standalone “hotspot.” Cellular internet is often limited by data caps. Once a certain monthly data limit is reached, cellular internet provides significantly slower data speeds.
